Shaping and influencing policy: October 2018

The last three months have seen a number of significant and exciting opportunities for us to continue to build on our work to shape and influence legislation, policy and practice. Below are some highlights of the opportunities.

Policy engagement and development

Between July and September, we submitted three consultation responses and two formal submissions to committees. We responded to the Part 9 of the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act - Allotments guidance, the Developing and Environment Strategy for Scotland consultation and the Scottish Deposit Return Scheme consultation.

We submitted a formal response to the Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform Committee on the Climate Change Bill and a response to the Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee on the Transport Bill.

Strategic engagement and credibility

In July we signed up to the Charter for Parks, encouraging the government to protect and support our parks and in August we launched the Scotland’s Most Beautiful High Street competition in partnership with Scotland’s Towns Partnership and the Sunday Herald.

We received our internationally recognised Environmental Management Standard ISO14001:2015 reaccreditation for the second time in July, demonstrating our daily commitment to excellent environmental practices across the work of the charity.

We became the first certified Carbon Literate Organisation in Scotland in July. The award acknowledges our ongoing efforts to reduce our internal carbon footprint and promote good environmental behaviours within the organisation.

In September our Corporate Services and Finance Director Catherine Gee published an opinion piece on the Sustainable Development Goals and the role we all have to play in delivering their ambitions.

These opportunities allowed us to demonstrate our expertise in a wide range of areas including single use items, sustainability and climate change. In addition, it highlights our work around the Global Goals, particularly Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 15: Life on Land and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals.
