Scottish Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2017 published

The Scottish Government has published source and adjusted emissions for Scotland for 2017, reporting against the provision set for the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. The Act provides for a fixed annual target for 2017 of 43.946 MtCO2e, which has been missed.

We have welcomed the attention and priority given to climate change in recent months by government, business and people across Scotland, but we must take this missed target as a reminder of the action that is required across Scotland to meet the ever more ambitious targets needed to tackle climate change. Responding to the climate emergency and meeting the net zero target for 2045 requires urgent action and collaboration across Scotland and beyond to ensure that we protect our environment for generations to come.

We support the call to action made by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland for further action, especially needed in transport, which remains Scotland’s largest emitter, in how we heat our homes and how we grow our food.  These changes have a wide range of benefits to people across Scotland, including improving health, reducing pollution and tackling fuel poverty.
