Harbours at 26 locations win environmental awards

Harbours and slipways across Argyll & Bute, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, the Highlands and the Western Isles have been recognised for environmental excellence following audits by our team of assessors.

The environmental accolades acknowledges  the commitment  of both CMAL, which owns the harbours and ports, and CalMac Ferries Ltd which operates them, to improving environmental quality.

Our audits looked a the maintenance of the buildings, cleanliness standards, waste management and engagement with the local community at 26 locations, and each site was accredited with a Bronze, Silver or Gold level.

David McHardie, Harbour Master at Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) said: “We are committed to delivering our services in an environmentally responsible manner in line with the Scottish Government’s strategic objective of creating a Greener Scotland.

“Working in partnership with our harbour operators CalMac Ferries, we commissioned Keep Scotland Beautiful to carry out an audit to assist in identifying our current environmental performance across the network of 26 harbours and other marine facilities.  We are delighted that has revealed that overall a very good standard is being achieved.  However, we recognise that there is always scope to improve and the results have identified areas in which we can strive to target our environmental efforts to continue to protect one of Scotland’s greatest assets.”

He, said: “Keep Scotland Beautiful is working closely with businesses and organisations across Scotland, helping them take direct action to improve their local environmental impact. the awards provide an exciting opportunity to assess and reward their efforts.

“We are delighted with the achievements of CalMac and CMAL. Both organisations have set a high bar for other transport operators across the country.”
