A deposit return scheme for Scotland
We are supportive of the proposed scheme, which addresses many of the points we made in our consultation response, as it will have the ability to capture as many items as possible that would otherwise go to landfill or be littered. It will allow consumers to return materials to a range of drop-off points, ensuring the system will be as inclusive as possible and mitigating against additional, potentially carbon emitting, journeys being made.
We believe that the implementation of a scheme is best set in the context of wider societal measures and a move towards a more circular economy. In particular, it should meet Scotland’s needs in terms of increased recovery and recycling, economic benefit and reducing litter and encourage improved producer responsibility for packaging and other waste.
Our CEO has congratulated Scottish Government and Zero Waste Scotland on their work on developing the scheme and we look forward to assisting wherever possible and commenting further when draft legislation is published later this year. We call for the rest of the UK to adopt an equally ambitious system to allow for efficient and coherent system across the UK.
