Brand new canal side mural for Ruchill
More than 20 years ago a mural was first designed by local children on the canal facing courtyard wall of The Quadrangle building on Ruchill Street, Glasgow with the theme of Our Canal, Our Future. Over time the mural faded and became almost obscured by overgrown vegetation.
Thanks to a partnership approach, canal college participants removed the trees and cut back the vegetation, while artist Sharon Scotland was commissioned by Impact Arts to run a series of consultation and design sessions with young people to provide inspiration for designing and revamping the existing mural. The final mural incorporates the ideas of the local community.
Lisa Snedden, our Canal Cultural Heritage Officer, commented, “I am so thrilled to see this area be brought back to life with such a bright depiction of what the canal, its heritage and its environment means to local young people. Our thanks go to all those who funded and helped us achieve this colourful mural”
The project was delivered by Impact Arts and funded by Scottish Canals and Historic Environment Scotland.
We are delighted to be taking forward new canal-based, cultural heritage projects, previously undertaken by Scottish Waterways Trust. These projects help create a brighter future for the people, communities and wildlife of Scotland by building life skills, connecting people with their natural environment and conserving our rich heritage.
