LEAF pilot programme begins across Scotland
Pupils across Scotland are engaging in a pilot programme that encourages better connections to nature and learning outdoors.
Our Learning about Forests (LEAF) pilot is now underway with 63 schools and nurseries across the country taking part.
The programme is an extension of our Climate Action Schools framework and will run until July. It aims to reconnect children and young people with natural environments, promote and expand outdoor education and improve their knowledge of forest-based ecosystems.
Through achieving these aims it is hoped that the children and young people who participate in the programme will gain a deeper understanding of the natural world and a desire to protect it.
Nicola Davidson, Education and Learning Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I am really excited to see the LEAF pilot programme getting underway.
“LEAF is a fantastic opportunity for children and young people to connect to nature, which is a vital part of their wellbeing and key to protecting the natural world. The experience of those taking part will also help us develop the programme for other schools across the country.
“I can’t wait to see all the wonderful activities schools and nurseries will get involved with as part of their LEAF awards.”
LEAF is a programme from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). This programme is an exciting opportunity for schools and nurseries to meet their Learning for Sustainability goals and also promotes and expands outdoor education and connection with nature for young people.
With the programme now live, a range of resources are available on our website. These resources will support pilot schools and nurseries to achieve their LEAF award and will allow establishments that are not involved to learn more about the award.
LEAF resources will be useful for youth groups, community groups and individuals looking to learn more about outdoor learning and can be used by schools in support of an Eco Schools Green Flag.
