Stirling Castle provides backdrop for Spring Clean recruitment drive

Poor local environmental quality is having a negative impact every day on over one million people living in Scotland.  Litter levels remain at the highest recorded in a decade.  But of the many significant environmental challenges facing us, litter is one of the easiest to tackle by individuals and communities getting out and taking action in their local areas.

We were joined on Wednesday 22 January by representativevs from Historic Environment Scotland, Forth Environment Link, Sustrans, Police Scotland, CRNS, Scottish Canals and the Marine Conservation Society to put out a united call out for even more people to register a clean up with us and make their litter pick count this Spring Clean 2020.

Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham said:

“We are all rightly proud of Scotland’s dynamic towns, villages and cities, as well as our beautiful beaches and green spaces. It’s important that our country looks it’s best at all times – litter-free and welcoming. Every piece of litter we remove prevents it from ending up in seas and oceans worldwide, protects our wildlife and our wider natural environment and also benefits our own health and wellbeing.

“I commend the many thousands of volunteers who took part in Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Spring Clean 2019 and would encourage individuals, communities, schools and businesses across Scotland to take part in this year’s initiative – particularly appropriate as we celebrate Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters.”

Spring Clean is a key part of our  wider year long Clean Up Scotland campaign, and excitingly in 2020 Scotland’s efforts will also count in the UK fight against litter with data feeding into the Great British Spring Clean.
