Seas the day! Beach Award applications now open

Applications to Scotland’s Beach Award are now open for the 2019 summer season.

Scotland’s Beach Awards are the benchmark for quality, celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches. These are awarded on an annual basis to beaches that demonstrate excellence in beach management and environmental best practice.

Keep Scotland Beautiful have been awarding beaches in Scotland for more than twenty-five years, celebrating some of the country’s best loved beaches. Last year, we awarded 61 beaches – from Shetland to South Ayrshire – and we continue to see the scheme grow in recognition and scale, providing benefits to tourism and local communities.

As well as contributing to the local economy, well-managed beaches play a vital part in improving our nation’s well-being, with proven links between physical and mental health and easy access to safe, clean and inspiring open spaces.

Beaches are assessed based on compliance with criteria across six pillars of the award: information provision, water quality, beach management, safety, access and facilities, and cleanliness. Beach Awards are designed to drive up environmental standards and help provide visitors with assurance of a well-managed beach.

Aoife Hutton, Project Officer, encourages managing authorities to enter the scheme:

“Our awards provide recognition for beaches making the most positive contribution to our communities and celebrate the dedication of local authorities, volunteers and community groups to maintaining and improving Scotland’s beaches.”

“With nearly half of Scotland’s population living within 5km of the coast, the value of beaches to Scotland cannot be underestimated. Ahead of 2020, Scotland’s Year of Scotland's Coasts and Waters, it is particularly important we celebrate and encourage the best management of our country’s beaches and marine environment.”

Local authorities, trusts or other groups managing beaches are invited to put in applications by 28th February. Successful applicants will be informed of their result in May, ahead of the new summer season.
