Perth cup collector is this month's Clean Up Scotland hero

Duncan Cameron from Perth has been presented with our “Hero of the Month” award in recognition of his efforts to remove single-use cups from the local area. The award is part of our national Clean Up Scotland campaign, and used to celebrate litter heroes across Scotland.

Duncan received the award for his ongoing efforts to reduce the number of single-use cups that are littered along a 6km route which includes Main Street, Bridgend, and Isla Road towards the entrance gates of Scone Palace and the A94 Perth to Scone Road.

Since February 2015 Duncan has been litter picking along this route and was inspired in 2018 to log the number of cups that he picked up along the way. To date, he has removed more than 1,000 cups. Well done Duncan!

Duncan Cameron commented:

“I am really pleased to receive this award. The scourge of single-use coffee cups in the countryside is often hidden in the grass and hedgerows. It is not until they are collected that you realise their true numbers.

“Keep Scotland Beautiful inspired me to reduce the amount of local roadside rubbish.  I hope that pictures of my ‘haul of shame’ will encourage others to dispose of their litter responsibly.”

Duncan was presented with his award by one of our project officers Aoife Hutton. The Hero of the Month award is supported by The Helping Hand Company that provide each Hero with a Clean Up kit - including a new Scottish litter picker and handy hoop.

Sam Martens, Project Co-Ordinator, Zero Waste Perth, added

“Duncan has been a real unsung hero these past few years in fighting back against the scourge of single use disposable cups and I’m delighted that his efforts are being recognised as Clean Up Hero of the Month.

Duncan’s efforts have really highlighted the scale of waste and littering caused by disposable cups. Hopefully we’ll see a reduction this year so Duncan can enjoy a well-earned break!”.

Aoife Hutton, Community Projects Officer, commented:

“I would like to congratulate Duncan on his efforts. In Scotland, it is estimated that nearly 500 million single-use cups are thrown away every year. Thanks to Duncan and his collections we have managed to remove a significant number of cups that have been carelessly thrown away.

“It is great that Duncan is so enthusiastic about helping to reduce the amount of litter in his own community. He sets a fantastic example of how we can all take pride in where we live and help to deliver environmental improvements.”
