Community Fridge to launch in Gorebridge

Community Fridge launch event

Greening Gorebridge would like to invite you to attend their Community Ceilidh to celebrate the opening of the Gorebridge Community Fridge. The event will take place on Saturday 2nd February, 5-8pm at The Gorebridge Beacon (next to the leisure centre).

During the evening we will create a fun science themed dance together with the expert help of The Science Ceilidh band who get rave reviews wherever they go! A simple vegetarian supper is included in the ticket price.

About the Community Fridge

The Gorebridge Community Fridge will help divert good quality produce from landfill by working with various partners and having it available to all in the community. The fridge will officially be open on Monday 4th February 10am-8pm. Ongoing opening hours will be 10am-8pm Mon-Thurs and Fri-Sun times will vary.

The Gorebridge Community Fridge has been enabled by a grant from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) and will be run by Greening Gorebridge with support by the environmental charity Hubbub. It is part of a first wave of Community Fridge Network fridges in Scotland which will reduce food waste whilst bringing people together and encouraging a spirit of sharing within communities.

Also known as ‘Solidarity’ or ‘Honesty’ Fridges, Community Fridges have been successfully introduced in Spain, Germany and other parts of the UK. There are currently 50 Community Fridge Network fridges open across the UK, which on average each redistribute half a tonne of food per month. Hubbub’s Community Fridge Network provides free advice, resources and support to Community Fridge organisers around challenges such as legal requirements and food hygiene, as well as acting as a hub to enable communities to share experiences and learn from each other.

More information on The Community Fridge Network, including a map of fridge locations and advice for those interested in setting up a Community Fridge can be found here.
