Frugalpac backs our Cup Movement initiative

Frugalpac, creators of the Frugal Cup, has confirmed it will back Scotland’s first paper cup recycling initiative.

Launched in Glasgow, our Cup Movement is aimed at stopping single-use cups going to landfill, transforming recycling and encouraging reuse.

With 95 million of Scotland’s 500 million single-use cups being used in Glasgow, the movement is bringing together public, private and third sector organisations together in a city-wide collaboration to encourage sustainable behaviour. Currently, just 4% of single-use cups are recycled in Scotland.

Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac, said: “48% of Glasgow’s drinks waste is single-use cups, but there is an alternative in our fully recyclable Frugal Cup, and we’re delighted to be one of the first to support this new initiative. By collaborating with coffee vendors and waste disposal facilities, we can ensure we all play our part in preventing coffee cups going to landfill.”

With the help of Simply Cups, the Cup Movement aims to stop single-use cups ending up as litter, by transforming recycling infrastructure, working with partners to install convenient recycling and cup collection points across the city and targeting the city’s thousands of regular cup users to switch to reusable containers.

Our CEO Derek Robertson commented on the Frugalpac partnership: “We are delighted to welcome Frugalpac as a supporter of the Cup Movement in Glasgow. We look forward to working with Frugalpac, alongside our other partners, to deliver transformational change across the city.

“The Cup Movement will bring together everyone in Glasgow to reach each and every cup before it becomes litter or landfill. Everyone has the opportunity to be part of this positive movement for change.”

Throughout 2019, the Cup Movement will also be working with partners to encourage Glasgow’s thousands of regular cup users to think carefully about their everyday choices. Over the longer term, the initiative will also focus on inspiring people to move to re-usable cups and encouraging behaviour change.
