Dumfries and Galloway to host Beautiful Scotland awards

Our annual Beautiful Scotland Awards is set to take place at Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries on Thursday 12th September.

The ceremony, which will be hosted by Dumfries and Galloway Council, will celebrate the hard work of communities, local authorities and businesses from across Scotland in improving the places they care for.

Hundreds of people from across Scotland will congregate in the town to recognise the tireless efforts of communities across the country who work to clean up, green up and beautify Scotland’s villages, towns and cities.

Up to 300 delegates will congregate in Dumfries to attend the event. They will receive tours of the local area, and the Council is set to engage visitors in the local attractions in order to encourage return visits.

Dumfries, led by The People's Project, won Gold and the Large Town category in 2018, with Brighten up Kirkconnel and new entrant New Luce Gardening Group receiving Silver Gilt.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee said:

“Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Beautiful Scotland Awards are something that this region holds close to its heart, having received several commendations over a number of years.  We are absolutely delighted to be hosting such a prestigious awards ceremony in the beautiful Crichton grounds, that will be in full bloom come late Summer.”

Councillor John Martin, Vice Chairman of the Communities Committee said:

“The awards will bring together volunteers and community groups from across the country to celebrate successes in all things related to keeping Scotland looking good.  This will of course bring with it a boost to the local economy and will showcase our region to many people who will be travelling to the Awards at the Easterbrook Hall.”

Beautiful Scotland is a competition we run in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Participants from Scottish towns, villages, cities and Business Improvement Districts can enter a range of categories and be assessed for their achievements in three core pillars - horticultural excellence, environmental responsibility, and community participation.

The prestigious Rosebowl Trophy, will be presented to the overall award winner, an entrant that shows outstanding commitment to the three core pillars, and a number of Discretionary Awards will also be made.

Alastair Seaman, Operations Manager on behalf of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said:

“We are really excited to be bringing the Beautiful Scotland Awards ceremony to Dumfries. Dumfries and Galloway Council has supported the awards for many years. During this time, nine Dumfries and Galloway groups have been presented with many accolades.

“The Beautiful Scotland Awards provide the opportunity to support the hard work of communities, local authorities and businesses across Scotland. Recognising the efforts that they make in helping to ensure local spaces are kept clean, green and beautiful. We look forward to celebrating their achievements in Dumfries.”

Mark Jardine from the People’s Project commented:

“The Beautiful Scotland Awards Ceremony being held in Dumfries provides an ideal opportunity to prove that Dumfries and Galloway is the Queen of the South.”
