Monthly Online Climate Book Group launching for a special Autumn series

17 September 2024

Online Climate Group encourages participants to join from anywhere in the Highlands.

PhD researcher Ingrid Brubaker from the University of the Highlands & Islands (UHI) in collaboration with Velocity Cafe & Bicycle Workshop (Velocity), partner of the Highland Community Waste Partnership (HCWP), and High Life Highland Libraries have launched an online version of their popular monthly Climate Book Group. The Climate Book Group is a sociable book group interested in reading books around environmental and climate topics. The group meets once a month at Velocity Café, and now additionally over Zoom.

As well as continuing to run the Climate Book Group at Velocity Café, Ingrid, whose PhD project investigates whether reading fiction can change a person’s perception of the natural world and the climate crisis, will host a new online autumn series of the Climate Book Group to encourage participation across the Highlands. The Climate Book Group is supported by Clare Sterritt from Velocity and High Life Highland Libraries, who kindly source and stock copies of the books, helping to reduce the cost for participants and the event's environmental impact.

Ingrid Brubaker, PhD researcher from UHI Inverness, said:

"An online space to discuss books about climate and environment allows for more people to attend even if they can't travel to Inverness, and I'm hoping it will become just as an inspiring place for discussion and conversation as the in-person reading groups"

Clare Sterritt, HCWP Project Officer for Velocity, said:

"We hope that the online option opens up the Climate Book Group to those further afield and unable to attend the in-person book group at Velocity."

The autumn Climate Book Group series will cover the following reads:

September - Wild Fell by Lee Schofield

October - Parable of a Sower by Octavia .E. Butler

November - Silent Spring by Rachel Carson

December - Preloved by Lauren Bravo

Participants are welcome to source their own copy or the books are all available on request from High Life Highland Libraries. Click here to find your local High Life Highland Library. Any issues with sourcing a copy of the book please email HCWP@velocitylove.co.uk.

Tickets operate on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, with an option to attend for free or pay £4 which contributes towards the cost of running the event. You can join one or all of the book group sessions but please sign up on Ticket Tailor each time. To find out more and to attend a Climate Book Group click here to visit Velocity’s website.
