Menstrie Scout Group are Clean Up Scotland Heroes
15 March 2024
We are delighted to award Menstrie Scout Group with a Clean Up Scotland Hero award for their efforts to reverse the country’s litter emergency.
The group regularly support Menstrie Community Council’s litter picks and always play their part to make sure the area is looking beautiful for Menstrie’s events, such as the duck race or the gala day.
For Halloween last year the group spent more than three hours clearing the leaves and scraping any debris and litter from the pathway on the Jubilee Path, allowing other young people and members of the community to enjoy Halloween safely.
Lynzie Mack, Menstrie Scout Group Leader, said: “It’s part of our badge so we like to help out when we can in the community, cleaning paths and litter picking. It’s nice to be recognised for it.
“Something we’ve always taught the youngsters all the way through is tidying up after themselves and leaving places cleaner than you find them.”
Eileen Turnbull, Chair of Menstrie Community Council, who nominated the group for the award, said: “They do such an awesome job. Getting that whole idea of keep it beautiful, don’t drop your litter and take it home, if that can be embedded as early as possible, hopefully for the majority of kids it sticks.”
Heather Mclaughlin, our Campaigns Coordinator, said: “I am incredibly pleased to award Menstrie Scout Group with our Clean Up Scotland Hero award. They are great role models for everyone and really deserve this recognition for their enduring determination.
“Scotland has a litter emergency, so it is more important than ever that we look after our beautiful country and keep it clean and tidy.
“Our latest report found that 90% of people believe litter is an issue across the country, so we all have a responsibility to play our part.
“We know how much people care about our environment, and I hope that Menstrie Scout Group’s award encourages others to get involved and help us keep Scotland beautiful.”
Chrissie Jeffery, Scottish Lead for Helping Hand, said: “As the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of quality, sustainable litter clearance tools and equipment, our commitment to environmental responsibility is at the forefront of our mission. Since 2014, we have taken immense pride in championing the Hero of the Month Award, a platform that recognises the extraordinary dedication of individuals and organisations striving to Keep Scotland Beautiful.
“Today, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the latest winner, Menstrie Scout Group, and we will be sending them five litter pickers to help continue their remarkable efforts in contributing to the collective goal of fostering a cleaner, greener Scotland.
“We believe in empowering those who share our passion for environmental stewardship, and it is truly inspiring to witness the positive influence these heroes have on their communities.”
