People in Scotland wanted for litter workshops
16 January 2024
People across Scotland are wanted for a paid online workshop to learn more about littering issues.
We're offering £35 to people who attend one of the five two-hour workshops throughout February, as part of our commitment to the government’s National Litter and Flytipping Strategy.
These workshops are looking for residents from Aberdeen, Dumfries and Galloway, North Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire to take part. There's also a final online workshop for people from all over Scotland to attend.
Workshops will take place on the following dates:
- Wednesday 7 February - Aberdeen (Online)
- Thursday 8 February - Dumfries and Galloway (Online)
- Tuesday 20 February - North Lanarkshire - Watersports Centre
- Wednesday 21 February - Renfrewshire - Renfrewshire House
- Thursday 29 February - Scotland (Online)
Eighty-two per cent of those who responded to the consultation on the new strategy shared a strong appetite for the establishment of a community education programme.
In response to this, as part of the Year 1 Action Plan, we're hosting these workshops which will cover the litter emergency in Scotland and plan a first step to tackle litter in the community. These workshops will also shape how future workshops may look like.
The workshops follow the publication of our Scottish Litter Survey, which found that 90% of people agree that litter is a problem across the country. The report also found that 70% of people believe that litter is a problem locally.
These Community Litter Workshops will explore why litter is a hard problem to fix; the scale of the problem; the wider impacts of the problem; and ways to consider changing the behaviours that are leading to the litter emergency.
Participants will be encouraged to think positively and consider a first step they can plan personally, locally and, where relevant, as part of their workplace to help change behaviours. There will also be plenty of opportunities for participants to share their views, so that future workshops can be designed to be as practical as possible.
Barry Fisher, our Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to deliver these workshops as part of our commitment to tackling litter and waste, and developing and delivering actions from the National Litter and Flytipping Strategy's Year 1 Action Plan.
“Scotland is facing a litter emergency, as our data clearly shows. However, we know that 85% of people want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area so we are determined to respond to this strong desire for change.
“I encourage everyone to register for these workshops as you will not only help us tackle litter at local and national levels, but also help us improve these workshops for future events.”
