Going green for World Tourism Day

With green investments being the theme of this year's #WorldTourismDay, we recognise the importance of making sure sustainable tourism is at the forefront of our minds when booking a holiday.

Our beach and park awards have highlighted the natural beauty that exists within our own country, highlighting local tourism and attractive and environmentally friendly alternative to holidays abroad.

The Green Flag Awards allow us to support the opportunities that our green spaces provide to enable exercise, improve mental wellbeing and provide safe spaces for play. With 87 winners in 2023, there's plenty of green spaces across Scotland for you to enjoy.

For more than 30 years we have been celebrating winners of Scotland's Beach Awards, with Aberdour Silver Sands and Nairn Central beach just a couple where sandy shores have been delighting locals and visitors alike for decades.

We are also the national operator for Green Key, which is licensed globally by the Foundation for Environmental Education, and have recently awarded 10 tourist establishments across Scotland with Green Key certification.

Through Green Key we can offer support for tourism establishments to achieve environmental improvements and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

As concern about the climate emergency and its impact on our environment increases for the general public, environmentally friendly accommodations are more in demand than ever. The Green Key award makes it easier for holiday goers to green while picking where to stay.

We want to continue to make it easier for residents, visitors and tourists to reduce their carbon emissions and bring us towards a green future, so we will continue to highlight climate friendly and green alternatives in Scotland.
