First in person Data Management Group meeting
30 October 2023
As a key delivery partner of the 2023/24 Action Plan to support Scotland’s Litter and Flytipping Strategy, which was published earlier this year, we hosted the first in person meeting of the Data Management Group today (30 October).
The group first met in August and was established to support the key data actions (15-19) within the NLFS action plan.
Alongside Scottish Government, Zero Waste Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and ourselves a further three representatives from the sector, all bringing a diverse range of experience attended the second meeting.
At the meeting Zero Waste Scotland presented aims and objectives of a data strategy, there was an open discussion on the necessity, barriers and examples of data sharing among different organisations for both litter and flytipping and SEPA outlined progress on action being taken to address flytipping – both a baseline on the issue and what a live picture would look like.
Katie Murray, our Environment and Place Services Manager said: “We’re leading on collecting and analysing litter data to support improvements in line with the Data Strategy.
“This meeting of this group gave us an opportunity to update on the five actions being taken forward and to discuss the next steps needed to deliver on the actions for year one of the National Litter and Flytipping Strategy”.
In addition to our support of the Data Management Group we are leading on strands of work to engage and empower communities through the creation of an online litter hub and a new litter education programme, as well as developing and testing innovative interventions to tackle littering behaviours.
The climate, nature and litter emergencies are all interlinked; with unsustainable consumption at the heart of all three. We’re committed to collaborating with partners to drive implementation of the Strategy Action plan in an effort to make Scotland clean, green and sustainable.
The group will meet every 6-8 weeks to shape the key actions moving forward.
