Our commitment to refreshed Learning for Sustainability Action Plan
We have welcomed a refreshed action plan placing sustainability at the centre of the Scottish education system which was launched on 23 June 2023. It includes an ambitious commitment to ensure that every school and early learning setting in Scotland will be sustainable by 2030. Further actions in the Learning for Sustainability Action Plan include development of new LfS related qualifications, commitments to outdoor learning, setting up a new online LfS portal, establishing a LfS Mentor Network for educators and a children and young people LfS Leadership Group.
Our Education Manager, Daniel Barrie, who participated in working parties reviewing the plan, commented, “As a country we are working towards becoming a Net Zero nation by 2045 and have set an entitlement to Learning for Sustainability for every learner. Those children and educators at school now will be the ones to help us achieve this ambition. But to do that they need the right tools and information – so we are pleased to welcome the refreshed Learning for Sustainability Action Plan and look forward to ensuring our activities support its outcomes in the coming years.
“Our Climate Action Schools framework builds on our existing activity and increases opportunity for learning across five core components: learning for sustainability; climate emergency; biodiversity; litter and pollution; and amplifying pupil voices. Our programmes include those that support educators and learners to reconnect with biodiversity, to understand the climate, nature and litter emergencies and which inspire action for our environment.”
Launching the strategy at Grove Academy in Dundee, Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth said: “Perhaps more than any other group, our children and young people recognise the importance of climate and social justice. The new Target 2030 ambition within the strategy is about placing sustainability at the heart of the education system, revolutionising what and how students learn. This strategy is about building a powerful movement for change. I look forward to seeing how children, young people, learners and educators embrace this new strategy and how the Scottish education system changes to meet the challenges of tomorrow as a result of this inspirational work.”
