East Ayrshire schools triumph at Education Awards
20 June 2023
Schools gathered for East Ayrshire’s Clean, Green Education Awards where we recognised and celebrated the creativity and achievements of our young people driving behavioural change in our schools and across our local communities.
A total of 24 schools were presented with an Eco-School Green Flag and certificate for their achievements. Of those 24, nine received a flag for the first time, eight are rejoining and seven renewed.
In 2022 children and young people from schools across East Ayrshire gathered to celebrate the first Clean, Green Education Awards. It follows the first Children and Young People’s Climate Conference in October 2019 where the young people in East Ayrshire helped shape the Council’s Clean Green Climate Change strategy which was agreed by Council in June 2021.
The work that the young people have been doing to combat climate change simultaneously counts towards their Clean, Green Award and their Green Flag Award and there is currently close to 80% of schools in the local authority area engaging in the initiative.
Daniel Barrie, our Education and Learning Manager, said: “We had such an inspirational day at East Ayrshire’s Clean, Green Education Awards ceremony.
“These young people have shown a clear drive and determination to play their part in our battle against climate change and they should all be extremely proud of their efforts.
“We have seen amazing work happening in schools and communities across Scotland to address the significant environmental issues we face and all the young people in East Ayrshire have gone above and beyond to play their part.”
Green Flag Awards are the pinnacle of the international Eco-Schools programme which forms an integral part of our Climate Action Schools framework. Our education initiatives support Scotland’s educators, young people and children to progress Learning for Sustainability and climate change education.
