Win a paddleboarding experience for two on the River Tay

As part of our award-winning campaign Upstream Battle – which is active on the River Clyde and the River Tay - volunteers from Tayside are being sought to complete a 100m litter survey on a stretch of path or beach next to the River Tay or a waterway that feeds into it and upload the results to an online portal.
All those who submit data before the 16 May 2022 will be entered into a prize draw to win a paddleboarding experience for two on the River Tay with either Wild Shore, Dundee or Willowgate Activity Centre, Perthshire. Both outdoor experience providers are Upstream Battle Anchor Groups – volunteers which have committed to support the campaign with surveys and litter picks.
Heather McLaughlin, our Campaign Coordinator said: “We know that 80% of marine litter comes from land and that we need to tackle this problem upstream. Our stats also highlight that litter levels are on the rise and 88% of people believe that litter is a problem nationally – this is unacceptable.
“If we want to get rid of marine litter in our seas and oceans we need to understand how, where and what types of litter are getting into our local waterways. So, we are calling for people to carry out a short survey for us to help build a picture of the litter out there, and its potential impact. The data will also help develop bespoke messaging and campaigns to target the problem.
“We are delighted to offer a fun prize as part of the campaign and look forward to announcing the winner in May.”
Launched on the Clyde in response to the huge public and political concern around marine litter, over the last three years Upstream Battle has supported communities to raise awareness, gather evidence and inspire action. We were delighted to launch the campaign on the Tay in 2021, and the data collated from any submitted litter surveys will form part of a report on campaign that will be published on 8 June - World Oceans Day.
