Supporting Businesses to take the plunge and join Upstream Battle
30 August 2022
This morning (Tuesday 30th August) we hosted a breakfast briefing for businesses and other organisations from across Glasgow, to encourage engagement with our award-winning campaign, Upstream Battle. It was attended by a wide range of partners and supporters including BAE Systems, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Scottish Power and Scottish Water.
Since Blue Planet 2 came out in 2018 the public have become more aware of the increasing amount of litter and plastic in our oceans. However, 80% of marine litter comes from land, washed into gutters, blown into streams, carelessly discarded.
In October 2018 we launched Upstream Battle on the Clyde. For the last five years, the campaign has been raising awareness, gathering evidence, and inspiring action in Glasgow and the Clyde Valley to tackle marine litter from source. It has successfully brought together a diverse range of stakeholders from the public and private sectors, along with communities and schools from up and down the Clyde Valley, to focus on developing innovative approaches to tackling this vital environmental challenge.
Barry Fisher, our Chief Executive, said:
“It was fantastic to see so many businesses and organisations represented this morning at our event. A common message from all of our speakers was that no one organisation or sector can tackle this enormous problem, and collaboration across all sectors is key. Our briefing for businesses was aimed at supporting them to make a difference in their communities.
We want to encourage all businesses from across the Clyde Valley, whether close to the Clyde or a tributary, to get involved to help us tackle marine litter from source to sea. Whether it’s through sharing out messages to audiences or colleagues, supporting a local community group or helping us litter pick and survey everyone and get involved. If you’re a business and would like to hear more about how you can support the campaign get in touch with one of the team.”
The event was facilitated by the Hilton Garden Inn who provided the space and refreshments.
