Pawpular pooches say: Bag it and bin it!

11 August 2021

The 2021 #DoggyAmbassador competition has come to a close, with two local winners selected by popular vote to be the faces of the 'bag it and bin it' message for our #MyBeachYourBeach campaign this year.

Freya, the three year old Great Dane is a local of Kinghorn Harbour beach and will be the Doggy Ambassador for the campaign beaches along the east coast.

Monty the sprightly Sprointer hails from Irvine beach and will feature on the west coast campaign.

The winners were selected from a total of 26 adorble entries. They will feature on campaign materials on the beach and online, reminding dog walkers to make sure to 'bag it and bin it' and never leave dog poo, on or near the beach -or anywhere else.

My Beach Your Beach aims to support bathing water quality improvements at Kinghorn and Irvine beaches, as well as Ayr, Troon and Saltcoats/Ardrossan on the west coast and Portobello and Fisherrow Sands on the east.

The camapign does this by encouraging general beach stewardship by locals and visitors alike and, unfortunately, dog poo is one of the key issues targeted.

Campaign officer Georgina Massouraki said " dog poo left on or near the beach is not only a disgusting find for those out to enjoy the sand and sea but it can also impact on bathing water quality, particularly at sites where this is already a challenge. By reminding dog owners to always have a dog poo bag to hand so they can 'bag it and bin it', our local DoggyAmbassadors will be making a valuable contribution to ensuring that the beach and sea are clean for everyone to enjoy".
