Almost 3,000 Scottish citizens now certified as Carbon Literate

Ahead of COP26 United Nations climate change negotiations coming to Glasgow in November, we are delighted to announce that we have supported 2,622 learners to become certified as Carbon Literate in Scotland in partnership with the award-winning Carbon Literacy Project.
Extreme weather events driven by climate change are becoming increasingly severe, and their economic impacts increasingly obvious. So, it has never been more important for us all to commit to meaningful carbon reduction actions to tackle the climate crisis quickly and at scale, and we are now calling for a legacy of learning.
In 2018, we were recognised as the first Carbon Literacy Training Organisation in Scotland and are currently the only with Gold Carbon Literate Organisation status.
We have developed, delivered and overseen the training and certification of elected members, employers, educators, community leaders, young people and individuals since 2016.
And, on Friday 6 August, it was announced that across the UK 20,000 people have been formally assessed and certified as well as having pledged to take well over 40,000 actions to directly address climate change and immediately reduce carbon emissions. More than 10% of these were in Scotland, trained by us.
Carbon Literacy engages, informs and inspires participants from all walks of life to act right now to reduce carbon emissions and also to plan longer term action to move us to become a net zero society.
Catherine Gee, our Deputy Chief Executive said: “We’re calling for the whole nation to become Climate Literate; with improved understanding of climate change we have a better chance of saving ourselves, nature, wildlife and our planet from this emergency.
“This is why we are so proud to be an official partner of the Carbon Literacy Project and to have played our part in training more than 10% of the UK national total of 20,000 to become carbon literate. It has been great to be part of so many people’s learning journeys as they grapple with understanding the challenges that climate change poses, and the actions that they can take to help Scotland become a Net Zero Nation.

“When Carbon Literacy learners are given both knowledge and agency to take action, we see newly Carbon Literate individuals taking person action at the small scale, but also professionally at massive scale, resulting in real savings of carbon immediately, and a long-term shift towards the kinds of personal and organisational behaviours that will deliver the zero-carbon society that we all need.
“We could not have achieved this without the work of Keep Scotland Beautiful and all the individuals and experts who have worked so hard to make this happen and deliver real change now”.
Over 60 organisations have now been certified as Carbon Literate Organisations, but over 1,500 organisations now have Carbon Literate staff.
Work by Jacobs Engineering indicates that each Carbon Literate citizen reduces their personal and/or professional resource footprint by between 5% and 15% annually.
