Take action on roadside litter this May

In order to raise awareness of the issue of roadside litter in Scotland, we will be running a week of coordinated action across the country, from 12-20 May 2018.

We’re calling on communities, businesses, schools and local authorities to sign up and get involved in helping raise awareness of the issue in the build up to, and during, the week of action in May through a number of activities. This call to action comes as the amount of rubbish, flytipping and graffiti blighting communities is at its worst level in a decade. In fact, in 2016/17, we recorded that  a whopping 82.8% of motorways and A road verges in Scotland were littered.

We are interested in hearing what young people think of roadside litter, and as part of the Year of Young People are inviting primary schools from across the country to take part in our roadside litter caption competition.

Given that 68% of Scottish adults think that there is a problem with the amount of roadside litter in Scotland, it is important that we work together to tackle the issue. You can get involved and carry out Clean Ups as part of our national Clean Up Scotland campaign this Spring. Although it can be unsafe to litter pick busy road verges, you can target transport litter in places such as car parks with our campaign materials.

Have you got something to say about roadside litter? You can help us spread the message online to ‘Give Your Litter a Lift, Take it Home’ with our bespoke communications pack.

Be sure to keep up with announcements about the #WeekOfAction on Facebook and Twitter as we reveal more over the coming weeks.
