South Lanarkshire park retains place as Scotland's best
We can confirm today (Tuesday 16th October) that Strathaven Park in South Lanarkshire has reached the top ten in a nationwide poll of the country’s best green spaces. It has retained its title as Scotland’s best park for the third year running.
Almost 1,900 green spaces from across the UK were competing for a place in the top ten UK parks, organised by the Green Flag Award scheme, administered in Scotland by Keep Scotland Beautiful. As the only Scottish park to reach the top ten, Strathaven park has taken home the accolade of Scotland’s top park. The full top ten list of parks can be accessed here.
Alistair McKinnon, Head of Facilities, Waste and Grounds Services at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Strathaven Park has not only come out top in Scotland yet again, but has also been rated in the top ten for the whole of the UK.
“The recognition is testament to all those who work tirelessly to keep the park at the level of quality that we have become accustomed to but which we should never take for granted, and to the many visitors who enjoy its facilities while also taking care of them and appreciating them.
“Very well done to all concerned.”
Tricia Summers, Chair of Friends of Strathaven Park, was delighted by the news:
“This is great news for Strathaven where the park is a well-loved amenity for local residents and visitors alike. The park is an asset to our town for everyday recreation as well as popular annual events like GalaDay and the Balloon festival. Thanks to the park staff who keep Strathaven Park looking beautiful.”
All Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces are entered into the annual People’s Choice Award vote, which every year sees countrywide mass public involvement in voting for the very best.
Cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens across the United Kingdom all achieved a Green Flag Award in 2018. In July, expert judges awarded the coveted Green Flag award to 71 parks and open spaces across Scotland, a full list can be accessed here.
Derek Robertson, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, commented:
“I would like to congratulate everyone at Friends of Strathaven Park and South Lanarkshire Council for maintaining this prestigious position. This award is testament to their hard work and confirms our view that Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the UK.
“This is the third year in a row that Strathaven Park has been voted as Scotland’s number one in the People’s Choice Awards. We are very proud of Scotland’s Green Flag Award parks. Each year we are impressed by the number of parks that meet this prestigious benchmark - recognising everyone’s efforts in helping to make their local open space a greener, cleaner and healthier place to live, work and play.”
