Shaping and influencing policy and practice
Strategic engagement and expertise
In January, our Chief Executive Derek Robertson gave evidence to the Environment Audit Committee, commenting the call for the UK Government to introduce a 25p levy on single use cups, and for all cups to be recycled by 2023. February saw the publication of an opinion piece from our Chairman, Lindsay Montgomery CBE, on local environmental quality highlighting the results from our October 2017 update of the Scotland’s Local Environmental Quality in Decline report and in March an opinion piece was published from Derek Robertson on the upstream battle against litter. These opportunities allowed us to demonstrate our expertise in the areas of single use items, litter and producer responsibility and recycling infrastructure and our work around the Global Goals, particularly Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production.
Developing policy and broadening horizons
Between January and March 2018 we responded to four consultations that are central to our work. In January we submitted a response to Empowering Schools: A consultation on the provisions of the Education (Scotland) Bill and in February we responded to the Fuel Poverty Strategy, the Call for Evidence on the Planning (Scotland) Bill and the European Commission Reducing Marine Litter: action on single use plastics and fishing gear consultation. In addition to this, in January we made a formal submission to the Environmental Audit Committee on the Chinese Import Waste Ban inquiry and in March we published our comments on the Climate Change Plan. The wide range of topics covered by these consultation responses, formal submissions and other engagement highlights our commitment to a range of Global Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 11: Sustianable Cities and Communities, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13: Climate Action, Goal 14: Life Below Waer and Goal 15, Life on Land.
In January, we continued to demonstrate our commitment to support the ambitions of the Global Goals by signing an open letter on Scotland’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as a member of Scotland’s SDG network.
