Scottish Park awarded UK Best Neighbourhood Park

Friend of Starbank Park were recently awarded UK best Neighbourhood Park at the Horticulture Week Custodian Awards

We are delighted that Friends of Starbank Park, one of our Outstanding It's Your Neighbourhood groups, has won this award. It's a great way to kick-off the summer months and Love Parks Week.

Starbank Park is a beautiful park situated in the North of Edinburgh. The park has a beautiful traditional walled garden as well as a grassy bank looking onto the Forth. To maintain the park to such a high standard the Friend of Starbank Park group work in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council. It is this strong collaborative effort that ensures the park retains it's Green Flag Award status.

The garden is designed so that it is accessible and usable for a range of people including raised beds in a Victorian Kitchen garden style so that younger people, wheelchair users an older people can work happily planting up the beds.  The park is well used by the local community and is also the location for lots of events throughout the year to help bring the local communities together. Check out the Friends of Starbank park's Facebook page for upcoming events.

This year's our It's Your Neighbourhood campaign has the theme connected to Scotland's Year of Young People. The group are enjoying working with the local Rainbows, Brownies and Scout groups planting beds, they've also worked with the gardening club from Edinburgh Academy Junior School. The park has a great Hans Christian Andersen children's trail too.

Janet McArthur, the chair of the group said:

“It’s truly wonderful that Starbank Park has been recognised as the best neighbourhood park. It’s an acknowledgment of the passion and commitment of all those involved in ensuring our beautiful park continues to be a focal point in our community.”

The group celebrated their win with a garden party that was open to the whole community. The group and neighbourhood have been enjoying the recent sunshine and they will continue to throughout Love Parks Week.
