Five star assessment for Glasgow community

We've rated a community in the north east of Glasgow as the first five-star Glasgow Housing Association neighbourhood in the city.

Since April, we have been working with tenants and staff at Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) to assess the envirionmental quality of neighbourhoods – and develop action plans to make areas even better.

We surveyed foyers and landings, back courts and open spaces, among other things, at high-rise flats and tenements. GHA’s Tenant Controlled Housing area – covering Baillieston, Greenfield, Sandyhills and Springboig – scored highest earning it a prestigious five-star (Gold) rating in our National Award for Environmental Excellence® and setting an example for other GHA communities to follow.

Pearl Murphy, 83, from Larchgrove Road, has lived in the area since the 1940s – and says she is proud to stay there. Pearl, a retired nurse, said: “To get a five-star review is really good going. I’ve always been proud of Larchgrove, but there’s been a vast improvement in the place.

“There used to be derelict land left to go to waste. Now, the back courts look great, with really nice fenced-off bin areas. Children can go out there and play. Staff are always here cutting the grass and picking up litter – they’ve really helped the area. It’s made a big difference.”

Maura McGregor, GHA’s Locality Director, said: “We’ve worked hard to make sure our area is somewhere tenants are proud of. To get the first five-star review from Keep Scotland Beautiful is the icing on the cake.”

Our Operations Director, Pete Leonard, added, “Tenants have been really engaged with the our training and the assessment process and we’re looking forward to getting even more involved in the future.

“We know that clean, green spaces and environments have a positive impact on health and wellbeing of people, and as our assessments have progressed we’ve noted increasing standards. The National Award for Environmental Excellence® offers a standardised benchmarking process between each individual local housing area and provides a system for monitoring continuous improvement going forward”.

“This is just the start of the customer journey to make communities even greater.”
