European Week for Waste Reduction

It’s that time of year again where organisations, businesses, universities and colleges, schools and individuals from across Europe are encouraged to take action to reduce waste. This year the week is running from 17-25 November and we want communities to get involved!

As always, the Love Food Hate Waste team at Zero Waste Scotland is focussing on food waste. This year they are offering help and materials to promote food waste reduction and sharing wherever in the country you are.

Why do we need to spread the word?

Across the world, a third of all the food that is grown or reared gets binned rather than being eaten. And here in Scotland £1.1 billion of food is thrown away - this is being lost from people’s wallets and the economy. On top of all that, it’s a loss of effort, energy and water, not to mention the methane that gets released when food rots in landfill, contributing to the problem of climate change.

How can I get involved?

There are lots of ways to get involved, but if you need some inspiration, download the EWWR Toolkit for ideas.

How can Zero Waste Scotland help?

The Love Food Hate Waste team also has a range of resources that you can download to encourage staff, customers, colleagues, friends and family to make the most of their food.

They are also offering a selection of resources that you can order for delivery while stocks last.

If you’d like to order or download any of the materials to support you to promote food waste reduction, head to www.zerowastescotland.org.uk/ewwr for more details.
