Climate Change Reporting Update

The Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN) team at Keep Scotland Beautiful is delighted to announce an excellent return of 145 climate change reports within the first mandatory year of the public sector climate change reporting requirement.

The reports will provide useful insight into how the Scottish public sector is responding to the challenge of climate change, including how public sector bodies are contributing to carbon emissions reduction, climate change adaptation and procurement policies and activity. The reports also provide information on the governance and management arrangements in place within public bodies on climate change.

The SSN team is now busy undertaking an initial quality assurance process of the submitted information in advance of the analysis of the 2015/16 data. All reports will be published on the SSN website in the New Year.

A functional review of the process is also currently being undertaken and all reporting organisations have been invited to feed their views into this process through the survey monkey questionnaire sent to reporting leads. In addition, we would encourage SSN Members to make use of the SSN Knowledge Hub, where updates will be posted, to share their reporting experience.

The Climate Change Act places duties on public bodies with respect to climate change. A statutory order under the Act requires major players to annually report on compliance with the climate change duties. The Order sets out the list of public sector major players required to report against the duties including local authorities, further and higher education institutions, National Health Service bodies, regional transport partnerships, and a range of other non-departmental public bodies.
