A Beautiful Scotland Judge's Story

Beautiful Scotland judges Colin Ainsworth and Jenny Sibbald judged the Medium Town category of Beautiful Scotland this year. Here, Colin tells us about two of their visits, and why he volunteers as a judge for us.

Our volunteer Beautiful Scotland judges were touring the country over the last few weeks, judging the 44 entries in this year's competition. One of our judges, Colin Ainsworth sent in this story of one of his judging day:

"We finished our visit to Burgh Beautiful Linlithgow. The sun was shining and all was well with the world. My co-judge Jenny has got sandwiches, so lunch is sorted. After lunch, we drove over the hills but got stuck at roadworks in Whitburn. Having managed to work our way round the traffic, we finally got to Lanark in Bloom - our judging destination for the afternoon.

"Our meeting point was in Castlebank Park, and suddenly it started raining! Judging time comes around and we meet Ernie and the rest of the volunteers at the horticulture centre in the park. They were all very cheerful, as were we, even though the weather was awful. We had an interesting guided tour around the sites that comprise the Lanark in Bloom entry and, when we were finished, the group served us tea and scones in their poly tunnel. The scones were fantastic, which was an added bonus!

"At the end of our visit, we showed a couple of the volunteers how to take Coleus cuttings and discussed the finer points of composting. Before we knew it, the time was nearly 5.30pm! We did have a bit of a lousy drive back in the pouring rain and mist, with the traffic being at a standstill on the Forth Road Bridge, but we kept busy discussing the day's visits as we drove and, despite the unfortunate weather, we were already looking forward to the next day.

"So why do we volunteer as judges for the Beautiful Scotland competition? To meet people and be of help (if we can). Oh, and to eat the scones!"
