This is a lovely sheltered sandy beach with natural barriers at both end.  On the north side there is a quiet harbour where boats can be anchored.  The beach is gently sloping with plenty of sand visible and with no problems with currents.  There is a great 9 hole golf course.  Portmahomack is also the site of an on going Pictish archaeology dig.

Situated 9 miles (14 km) east of Tain on the northern coast of the Tarbat Peninsula, Portmahomack has long been known to be on the site of early settlements. The earliest evidence of habitation is provided by shell middens pointing to settlement as early as one or two thousand years BCE.

There are the remains of an Iron Age broch a little to the west of the village. Finds of elaborate early Christian carved stones dating to the 8th-9th centuries (including one with an inscription), in and around the churchyard, had long suggested that Portmahomack was the site of an important early church in the sixth-seventh century.

Natural Space

The beach is mainly sandy, backed by sea-grasses and curves gently round the bay. In the warmer months it is used for watersport enthusiasts. This area is in the Moray Firth conservation area and dolphins and even whales might be spotted out at sea.

This lovely sheltered beach lies on the western edge of the pretty seaside village of Portmahomack on the Tarbat peninsula. Although on the eastern coast, the beach faces west, making it a good destination for visitors looking for attractive sunsets

Getting There

The nearest town is the ancient burgh of Tain. The village of Portmahomack is 6 miles from the main A9 trunk road and is easily accessed.  It has a bus route connection from Tain and the Seaboard villages.  There is plenty of free parking.
