Hayfield Community Centre has created a community garden in its grounds for all in the area to enjoy. A Climate Challenge Fund grant started a community growing project, and now strawberries, apples, plums and raspberries are ripening in the sunny south-facing spot, with potatoes, peas, salad leaves and onions amongst the vegetables. The group’s Community Gardener began as a volunteer helper but now manages the garden, adding her own spice plants for cooking Thai-style.
The grounds also provide a sheltered suntrap for people to sit, pollinators to buzz and children to play! Toddlers love planting and watering the growing flowers and vegetables.
In 2018, Hayfield Community Centre Growing was awarded a Certificate of Distinction to further recognise the groups' achievements.
