Donside Village Community
Donside Village has a good track record of communal growing and carbon reduction activities. In 2016 the group commenced its most ambitious project to date when it created the Donside Hydro. This is Scotland's first urban community owned hydro power turbine. The cost of £1.25m was raised through a community share and bond offer. The hydro produces electricity to supply 130 homes, and displaces 240 tonnes of CO2 annually. The scheme will produce an annual income for the community of around £20,000 per year. The creation of the hydro has brought back into public use an area of industrial waste land - 500 trees were planted during the landscaping of the area.
