Cook Grow Sew and Change

2017 Certificate Level 5 - Outstanding

West of Scotland Regional Equality Council’s project ‘Cook Grow Sew and Change’ engages with members of minority ethnic communities in Glasgow to understand the negative impact of climate change, and provides support to reduce carbon emissions, through various activities, such as the community garden. Run with the support of staff and volunteers, the garden came into being when working towards the Healthy Working Lives Bronze Award. Not only do members’ benefit from growing in the community garden and access free gardening workshops, they also get support to grow in their own spaces. Sessions help participants to build their skills and experiences while enhancing community involvement and reducing social isolation. The garden is now a hub for various community events such as the Harvest Festival, where it had a yield of 10 kgs of potatoes, which were made into pakoras and used as food for the festivities!
