Portobello

Portobello, fondly 'Porty', is just a stonesthrow from Edinburgh City centre. Popular with locals and visitors alike, this sandy stretch has a lot to offer including spectacular views of the Firth of Firth and a host of amenities including restaurants, bars and cafes along the promenade.

As one of three #MyBeachYourBeach locations, pilot interventions are being rolled out along this sandy shoreline during summer 2018 as part of a bathing water improvement plan for Portobello (Central and West). The work complements a range of improvement works being undertaken by Scottish Water and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to tackle sources of bathing water pollution. Bathing water quality at Portobello is affected by a number of sources, detailed in SEPA's bathing water profile for Portobello (Central) and Portobello (West). Live signage boards displayed at the beach display up to date water quality advice and you can also view live bathing water information via the SEPA bathing water app.

#MyBeachYourBeach bins at Portobello (24/07/2018)

Colourful bin wraps have been installed along Portobello Promenade, highlighting the link between our behaviour on land and water quality at the beach. The new bin wraps emphasise three key messages; bag and bin dog poo, don't feed the gulls and put litter in the bin. Ongoing monitoring will investigate the effectiveness of this intervention at Portobello over the course of the #MyBeachYourBeach campaign.
