Beach Award criteria
Scotland has beautiful beaches which are loved by local communities, visitors and the wildlife that call them home. Over the past 26 years, we are proud that some of the very best have flown our Beach Award flag.
Local authorities, land managers or community groups can all apply for a Beach Award. For a beach to be successful in gaining an Beach Award, it has to meet a number of criteria under the following pillars:
- Information provision
- Water quality
- Beach safety
- Beach management
- Access and facilities
After a new application has been received, a desk assessment takes place. The beach will be visited by a trained assessor during the bathing water season, who will ensure that the beach meets the criteria set out. The beach managers will receive a report on each awarded beach, following the assessor's visit. All awards are reviewed annually.
We host two meetings a year for award beach managers (in May and November) to provide an opportunity for networking, sharing examples of good practice and discussing any emerging issues.
Applications are closed for 2018, but if you are interested in finding out more please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
