East Haven

The beach at East Haven is popular with families and dog walkers. This is a rural beach with a diverse range of sealife and tidal seaweed. The sandy bay is surrounded by rocks which are great for rockpooling during low tide. Although the beach is not a designated bathing area it is a popular area for children and adults to paddle in the bay during summer.

Residents manage the community toilets from the end of March to October and have created a 'wee gallery' for visitors.

East Haven was first recorded in 1214 and can be seen on Pont’s map of the area in the late 1500s. It has been known as several different names through the times including “Ross Haven”, “Mauleshaven” and “Stinking Haven”. The village was a small harbour that used to catch lobsters to export to London and crabs, cod and haddock for local use.

During the 1930s the beach was visited regularly by the Royal Family when they were holidaying to Glamis. Carnoustie, which is only 2 miles from East Haven has been dated back to the Bronze Age.

Natural Space

Along the beach you are able to see wildlife close by, including dolphins and pink footed geese. The community at East Haven have environmental events scheduled regularly. They have done mini bio blitzes, surveys on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society and they often schedule bird and bat walks with specialists.

The area surrounding the small village of East Haven is full of green fields. The beach and village is very quiet and peaceful. It is a perfect place to appreciate the coastal surroundings and to spot wildlife.

East Haven is situated 1.5 miles (2 km) east of Carnoustie and 5 miles (8 km) south west of Arbroath.
