Salary: Voluntary (expenses only)

We currently have a number of exciting opportunities for Volunteer Judges to provide a vital link between Keep Scotland Beautiful and the communities which we support, encourage and reward through our annual Beautiful Scotland programme.

Beautiful Scotland is part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign which Keep Scotland Beautiful delivers in Scotland. Entrants from across Scotland are judged on three pillars of activity: horticultural achievement; environmental responsibility; and community participation, before being presented with awards in the autumn to recognise their sustained efforts throughout the year.

A number of the Beautiful Scotland award winners are nominated to represent Scotland at the UK finals the following year.

With support and training from Keep Scotland Beautiful, Volunteer Judges are responsible for supporting the judging process, providing invaluable constructive guidance to the entrants, and acting as an ambassador for Beautiful Scotland and the charity.

Applications are sought from volunteers who want to support our aim to make Scotland clean and green, today and tomorrow. Ideally, our volunteers will have a keen interest and experience in horticulture, knowledge and / or experience of reducing impacts on the environment, previous experience of working with community groups and be able to communicate effectively to support participating entrants.

The role is very rewarding and you’ll get to visit inspiring communities and meet other like-minded people from across Scotland. Find out why one of our volunteers takes part here.

For the first two years of your role, a mentor will guide you through the Beautiful Scotland year.

In 2022, volunteers are asked to commit to attend a training session for new judges where you will meet your mentor (to be arranged for the Spring), a judges training day (July), a debriefing session (online, 18 August (PM)), and undertake a minimum of two days judging during the first two weeks of August. Some travel around Scotland will be involved. There is also the opportunity to attend a Spring Seminar (April), the prestigious annual award ceremony (mid-September), the annual Beautiful Scotland and It’s Your Neighbourhood seminar (November) as well as other meetings and events during the year.

For further information about Beautiful Scotland, visit www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/beautifulscotland. You can find out about our current volunteer judges here.

Closing date for completed applications: continuous recruitment

Interviews: by phone/online meeting following receipt of application

Training dates: new judges’ session (Spring, date and location TBC), judges training and refresher session (July, date and location TBC)
