Beautiful Scotland Judge

Salary: Voluntary (expenses only)

Based in: Scotland

Further information: Beautiful Scotland

We currently have a number of exciting opportunities for Volunteer judges who provide a vital link between us and the communities we support, encourage and reward through our annual Beautiful Scotland competition.

Beautiful Scotland is part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign which Keep Scotland Beautiful delivers in Scotland. Entrants from across Scotland are judged on three pillars of activity: horticultural achievement; environmental responsibility; and community participation, before being presented with awards in the autumn to recognise their sustained efforts throughout the year.

Scotland forms a nation of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign, and a number of category winners of Beautiful Scotland are nominated to represent our country at the UK level the following year.

With support and training from Keep Scotland Beautiful, Volunteer Judges are responsible for supporting the judging process, providing invaluable constructive guidance to the entrants, and acting as an ambassador for Beautiful Scotland.

We're looking for applications from volunteers who want to support our aim to make Scotland clean and green, today and tomorrow. Ideally, our volunteers will have a keen interest and experience in horticulture, knowledge and / or experience of reducing impacts on the environment, previous experience of working with community groups and be able to communicate effectively to support participating entrants.

The role is very rewarding and you’ll get to visit inspiring communities and meet other like-minded people from across Scotland.

For the first two years of your role, you will be assigned a mentor who will help guide you through the Beautiful Scotland year.  After the two years, if you and we are happy with your progress, you will then officially join the judging team.

In 2020, volunteers are asked to commit to attend a day of training (end June – date and location TBC), a debriefing session in Stirling (mid August, date TBC), and undertake a minimum of two days judging between July and August. Some travel will be involved. There is also the opportunity to attend the prestigious annual award ceremony in September (date and location TBC), the annual Beautiful Scotland and It’s Your Neighbourhood seminar at the end of October and a judges get together and volunteer thank you lunch in January; both events in Stirling.

For further information about the campaign, visit www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/beautifulscotland and find out about our current volunteer judges here.
