Carbon and Climate Change
It's clear that the future will be low carbon - the risks are too great, and the opportunities too many, for it to be otherwise. It's also clear that in order to thrive, organisations need to take action now to embrace a low carbon future.
The Scottish Government's Climate Change Plan, set out in 2018, sets out clear goals and direction of travel in addressing climate change. There is an expectation that, in future, all businesses will be required to put in place processes to measure mange and report on how their activities impact upon climate change. From 2019 the number of organisations who must report on the their carbon emissions will increase by tenfold. Whether is Public Bodies Reporting, the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS) or Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), the direction of travel is clear.
At Keep Scotland Beautiful, we want to support organisations of all sizes and from all sectors to go beyond mere compliance with regulations. The Carbon and Climate Change services we offer will help you build an organisation fit for the future by:
- Reducing overheads - saving carbon often means saving money
- Staying competitive and winning business - a strong sustainability track record can mean the difference between winning a contract and not
- Recruiting and retaining the best people - a recent NUS survey showed a majority of graduates would accept a lower salary to work for an environmentally and socially responsible organisation
- Demonstrating your contribution to building a better world - how are you contributing to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals?
Our carbon and climate change services
We can provide carbon and climate change services, training and advice to the public, private and third sectors offering the following support:
Carbon footprint measurement and monitoring
We can provide technical and support services to help your organisation identify its major carbon emission sources, quantify them and establish systems and tools to monitor them. We'll also work with you to identify major carbon saving opportunities. Carrying out this activity will enable you to comply with both ESOS and SECR requirements.
We can do this for you, or we can offer capacity building support and training to enable you to carry this out yourselves using a range of available tools and resources.
Carbon management plans
It’s not just about footprinting; you will need to develop a strategy that will determine how the whole organisation responds to the challenge of managing carbon emissions. This means using existing management and communication structures or creating new ones to help in data and information gathering, reporting and implementing projects that reduce emissions whilst improving efficiency.
We can work with you to create a carbon management strategy that will fit your requirements – this includes deciding on governance, management and reporting structures as well as creation of policy and procedures required.
Reducing emissions relies on every single person in an organisation being aware of the carbon impacts of their choices, and feeling motivated and supported to take action. Carbon Literacy is a day's worth of learning for employees on climate change and is a great way to engage and involve staff in your organisation's low carbon journey. We're recognised as a Carbon Literacy Training Organisation by the award-winning Carbon Literacy Project, and are the experts in this field in Scotland.
We'll support you to develop and deliver a bespoke accredited Carbon Literacy course for your staff, enabling them to individually and collectively reduce your organisation's emissions. We can also support you to become recognised as a Carbon Literate Organisation, demonstrating your commitment to establishing a low carbon culture.
Behaviour Change and Community Engagement
Identifying carbon reduction projects can seem like the easy part when you come to realise implementing them relies on individuals in an organisation changing ingrained patterns of behaviour. We've lots of experience working in a variety of settings to encourage and promote low carbon behaviours. Through this we're very aware of how important the community your organisation exists in is to supporting positive changes.
We can work with your staff, managers and local a communities to develop organisational and community engagement programmes with lead to behaviour change and have a positive impact on carbon emissions. We use recognised models of changed such as ISM, and can connect you with local community organisations though our networks.
