Eco-Schools and Sustainable Learning Settings

The Scottish Government Action Plan for Learning for Sustainability (LfS) “Target 2030” calls for all places of education to become sustainable learning settings by 2030, having a whole school approach to LfS by embedding it through the 4Cs of Curriculum, Campus, Culture and Community.

The Eco-Schools Programme,  through its framework of Seven Elements, provides a structured and easy way to embed LfS through the 4Cs, supporting settings to become and continue to be sustainable learning settings.

How can the Eco-Schools framework help me embed the 4Cs?

Here are some examples:

Curriculum

  • Eco-Schools actions lend themselves to IDL Topic work linking to multiple curricular subjects.
  • Creating baselines and measuring progress contributes to STEM and digital skills.
  • Sharing stories and results are an opportunity for developing literacy, creativity and Meta Skills.

Campus

  • Creating space for nature.
  • Reducing resource usage including energy and water.
  • Encouraging behaviour change by improving waste and recycling facilities and systems.

Culture

  • Pupil voice sits at the heart of Eco-Schools.
  • Pupils, staff and community working together in their local area.
  • Opportunities to exercise UNCRC rights and explore the SDGs.

Community

  • Promoting active travel.
  • Gaining support for your setting from your local community.
  • Supporting the community through foodbank donations, raising funds for charity, organising swap events.
