Aberdour Silversands

Aberdour Silversands is one of the most popular and attractive resorts on the Fife coast. The beach offers the freshness and variety of the seaside as well as the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The shore, in its charming setting, looks out to the Islands of Inchmickery and Inchcolm, where there is a famous Abbey. The Fife coastal path passes by this beach and the section from here is well worth walking.

History

Aberdour is an old village, probably dating back to the Picts. There are still houses around the village retaining their historical look. In the 1850s, Aberdour was popular with pleasure boats coming over from Leith, this gave demand for more hotels and tourist spots to be build. Since, Aberdour has greatly expanded.Aberdour castle lies in the centre of Aberdour. The castle originated from a modest house in the 13th century. Since then, the Earls of Morton have added parts to it in a Renaissance style. During the 17th century there was a fire in the castle and it was left by the family to ruin. Next to the castle there is St Fillan’s Church, this is a very well preserved parish from the 12th century. The church is said to be the site where Robert the Bruce gave thanks for his Bannockburn victory in 1314.

Natural Space

There area surrounding Silver Sands has lots of wildlife and greenery. The Marine Conservation Society have many records of jellyfish sightings on this beach. The two beaches in Aberdour are connected by Fife Coastal Path. Nearby you can also visit Hawkcraig, a popular rock climbing location.

Setting

Aberdour is found on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. Behind the beach there is Silver Sands park. Aberdour is only a half hour commute from Edinburgh via the train. It is 18miles (29km) driving distance which adds to its popularity from locals and tourists.

Getting There

The beach is just off the A921 road from Inverkeithing to Burntisland. The beach is 10 minutes walk from train station.

This beach is a designated bathing water site. Further information about water quality at this site can be found on the SEPA website. Please observe local signage and only swim where it is safe to do so.
