St Machar Biodiversity Community Group

The aims of the project are to increase the biodiversity of the graveyard and enhance the area for all visitors. The group has agreed a grass maintenance plan with Aberdeen City Council to keep some areas of the graveyard cut regularly and some areas only cut once a year. Also, they are encouraging less use of herbicides and have planted up longer grass areas to the east of the cathedral with native wildflowers.
This year they are hoping to provide more signage and are hoping to encourage pollinators with newly planted crocuses and to continue planting more Thyme. They are also hoping to have a Family History event in the summer and to provide Educational workshops and tours.
In 2022, the group were recognised with the NatureScot It's Your Neighbourhood Pollinator Friendly Award - 2nd place - and received £150 towards pollinator friendly activities.
