Plains Community Futures is a voluntary group run for the benefit of residents and visitors to Plains village near Airdrie. The group’s aims are to enhance the look and feel of the village and to create a family friendly village. It welcomes all to enjoy the barrel displays and the new Stanrigg Park with its unique climbing boulder.

The group does its’ upmost to keep the village clean and encourage others to do likewise. The group is currently creating a new community garden so that it can have a quiet but interesting place to visit and enjoy the surroundings. As part of this, the group will begin growing fruit and veg so that it can provide the community with fresh food. The group also links in with the three schools and helps educate local children with gardening and local wildlife.

In 2021, Plains Community Futures was recognised with the Keep Scotland Beautiful Award: The group has achieved a great deal since lockdown, in an area where Covid levels have been very high. The new community garden is a particular highlight. Very good progress has been made upgrading some disused sport pitches to a modern park, with innovative synthetic climbing rocks for children, and increased use of the park by older people thanks to thoughtful provision such as solar lights.   Restrictions due to the pandemic haven’t stopped good work continuing at the local primary school’s allotment, which now has two new polytunnels.  The group made contributions to the local community throughout the pandemic, distributing materials and food. The area suffers from litter, flytipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour, but the group has made progress tackling all of these. There is an impressive list of supporters and contributors at the back of the group’s well organised portfolio, and group members are remarkably adept at sourcing plants, materials and help from a variety of businesses and organisations.
