Pupils at James Gillespies Primary School improved both recycling and litter with posters, new bins and a community litter pick.

Pupils at James Gillespies Primary School wanted to improve recycling and tackle a litter problem at their school.

They drew up a list of activities for their Wrigley Litter Less Campaign including increasing paper and packaging recycling, a litter poster competition, a community litter pick and purchasing new recycling bins.

The Eco-Committee were responsible for the campaign and met on a regular basis.

The Committee delivered a presentation on litter at a school assembly to all the pupils and teachers, and displayed information on the Eco-Schools Noticeboard and in newsletters.

Pupils took part in an Environmental Review at the start of the campaign, then put together an Action Plan.

The main actions in the plan were to reduce litter in school, playground and the surrounding community.

Pupils kept a large floor book in which they gathered evidence throughout the campaign in photographic form.

At the end of the campaign the children evaluated what they had done and were very pleased with the changes made in such a short time.

The community assisted by letting pupils put up posters in the shops and café.

Changeworks, a local community charity came into the school to deliver an assembly and classes on litter and recycling.

Parents also helped with a fundraising day. Pupils have raised an awareness of litter and recycling.

They have also raised the profile of the Eco-Committee and the impact they have on the environment.

The school now has recycling bins in classrooms and pupils are awaiting new playground bins.

Litter picks have been happening on a regular basis and the litter has reduced.

The activities which are mentioned above were interlinked with all of the curriculum areas.
