Tha sinn gu math toilichte am bloga seo a roinn gus #SeachdainNaGàidhlig a chomharrachadh. Chaidh a sgrìobhadh le Catrìona Mulholland, an t-Oifigear Foghlaim agus Ionnsachaidh againn, a tha air a bhith ag eadar-theangachadh na goireasan Sgoiltean-Èiceo againn.

To celebrate #WorldGaelicWeek we are delighted to share this blog from Catriona Mulholland, our Education and Learning Officer, who has been translating our Eco-Schools materials into Gaelic.

Tha mi cho toilichte a bhith ag obair leis an sgioba foghlaim an seo aig Keep Scotland Beautiful. Tha mi air a bhith an sàs ann an iomairt an aghaidh atharrachadh na gnàth-shìde bhon àrd-sgoil air sgàth na tidsearan iongantach a bha gam bhrosnachadh ri smaoineachadh air saoghal na bu chothromaiche agus na bu shìtheile. Mar sin, tha fios pearsanta agam air dè cho cudromach agus cho cumhachdail ’s a tha foghlam àrainneachdail.

B’ e am miann seo, airson saoghal cothromach agus sìtheil, a thug orm Gàidhlig ionnsachadh.  Tha èolaichean air tòrr a sgrìobhadh mu dheidhinn na h-adhbharan a bhios mion-chànanan a’ crìonadh, agus an t-suidheachadh èiginneach anns a bheil nàdar agus a’ chlìomaid. Tha e cudromach dhomhsa gu bheil sinn a’ dìon na Gàidhlig mar phàirt den bhòidhchead is iomadachd an t-saoghail.

Tha foghlam Gàidhlig air a bhith air leth cudromach do ath-bheòthachadh na Gàidhlig anns na bliadhnaichean mu dheireadh, le ceudan de thidsearan ag obair air leth cruaidh gus foghlam Gàidhlig a sholarachadh, a dh’aindeoin gainnead ghoireasan an taca ris’ Bheurla.

Tha iomadh goireasan tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig againn a-nis gus taic a thoirt do sgoilearan agus tidsearan a’ gabhail pàirt ann an Sgoiltean-Èiceo. A bharrachd air sin, tha sinn a’ lìbhrigeadh Clasaichean airson a’ Chlìomaid (Climate Ready Classrooms) tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig gus an ionnsaich sgoilearan mu atharrachadh na gnàth-shìde, bith-iomadachd, agus mar as urrainn dhaibh cuideachadh.

Tha mi air mo dhòigh gu bheil mi an sàs ann an dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil sgoiltean agus tidsearan a tha làidir a thaobh foghlam na h-àrainneachd air an cuideachadh gus sin a thabhainn tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

I am very excited to be working with the education team here at Keep Scotland Beautiful. I’ve been involved with climate activism since high school due to the wonderful teachers who inspired me to imagine a fairer and more peaceful world. As such, I know how important and how powerful environmental education can be.

It was this dream, for a fair and peaceful world, that brought me to learning Gaelic. The historic reasons why minority languages have been in decline has been written about extensively by academics, as has the climate and nature emergencies.  If feels important to me that we protect Gaelic and that this also plays a key part of protecting our world's beauty and diversity.

Gaelic education has played a crucial role in the Gaelic revival of recent years, with hundreds of teachers working incredibly hard to provide high quality education in Gaelic, despite the lack of resources available in comparison to English.

We now have lots of Gaelic resources to support pupils and teachers taking part in Eco-Schools. We are also delivering Climate Ready Classrooms in Gaelic to teach pupils about climate change, biodiversity, and what they can do to help.

I’m very glad to be a part of ensuring that the schools and teachers who are passionate about delivering environmental education are supported to do so through the medium of Gaelic.
