Clean Europe Network
We are a founding member of the Clean Europe Network, a coalition of organisations co-ordinated at EU level by the European Litter Prevention Association. Currently our Chief Executive, Derek Robertson, is President of the European Litter Prevention Association which oversees the network’s activities
The Clean Europe Network brings together organisations from across Europe in a coalition to take action on litter prevention. The network members share their experiences, expertise, best practice and research and have a common vision of a litter free Europe by 2030. All member organisations have signed the Clean Europe Charter.
The work programme of the network is linked to many European priority objectives and engages with the European Commission and industry to make the case for strong leadership and robust action on litter. In December 2015 we welcomed the publication of the Circular Ecomony Package.
The network also aims to enhance initiatives of its members, increase awareness of its member activities and organise information sharing events and workshops.
We are currently involved in two network projects. The first is to develop a common approach to measuring litter, which could be used all across Europe, including in countries where litter measurement has not been carried out before, and secondly a project to address how litter ends up in waterways. We have been involved in testing the survey methodology along with network member organisations 53 locations in 10 countries across Europe.
The network has strong backing from the European Commission and is financially supported by the commission's environmental programme, Life Plus. The former EU Environment Commissioner (Janez Potočnik) was present at the Network’s launch in March 2013, and expressed his support. The present Commissioner Karmenu Vella gave the keynote speech at the Network’s Stop |Litter Now Summit in April 2016.
