John Frater
John joined Keep Scotland Beautiful as a Charity Trustee on 10 May 2000, in the City Chambers of Edinburgh at the Inaugural meeting of Keep Scotland Beautiful. He then became an employee from December 2004 until March 2017 when he rejoined the board, stepping down in May 2021.
John was presented with a Certificate of Fellowship by HRH The Earl of Forfar KG GCVO in June 2021 to mark his 20-year contribution to our charity.
Prior to joining Keep Scotland Beautiful, John spent 10 years as Chief Executive of the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland. He is a Fellow of the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS), a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and was a Technician Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
John has served as a charity trustee and has advised several UK and Irish charities and professional bodies with governance, business and organisational matters. He is a Judge for the National Railway Heritage Awards and a member of the Vintage Carriages Trust.
As an enthusiastic amateur gardener, John was also Keep Scotland Beautiful’s representative on the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom Federation.
John said, "I have been passionate about the work of Keep Scotland Beautiful since I first encountered the charity towards the end of the last century. Since then, it has been my great privilege to serve as a volunteer, employee and charity trustee. And what an amazing honour it is to have now been appointed an Honorary Fellow. I’m looking forward with tremendous enthusiasm to fulfilling this wonderful role."
