Waste Aware Scotland is a national campaigning programme that aims to change public attitudes and behaviour towards waste by increasing awareness of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The programme has been endorsed by the Scottish Government, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA). It is also linked to the Scottish Government's sustainable development campaign It's Our Future.
The Waste Aware Scotland Programme
The Waste Aware Scotland programme involves developing campaigning strategies to promote individual waste reduction, reuse and recycling behaviour. The campaigns are matched to real infrastructure, such as kerbside recycling services and recycling centres and points, to give householders the means to take action. Some specific Waste Aware Scotland campaigns include:
- Love Food Hate Waste
Over £1 billion worth of food is wasted by consumers in Scotland each year. That’s an average of £430 per household! Stopping this food waste could prevent the equivalent of 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year in Scotland. The same as taking 1 in 4 cars off the road! To help change this expensive habit, Waste Aware Scotland have re-launched the Love Food Hate Waste campaign. The website encourages households to save money and help the environment with hints and tips on purchasing and storing food, along with recipe ideas from some of Scotland's top chefs and food writers.
- Stop The Drop
Some direct mail is poorly targeted and irrelevant, meaning that over a third of it is thrown straight in the bin unopened. The Stop The Drop campaign gives 5 helpful steps which people can take to reduce the amount of unwanted mail they receive and help benefit the environment.
- Sort It
The Sort It website helps people to find out about recycling services in their local area. Users can search for details about kerbside collection schemes, locate their nearest recycling centres or find out how to arrange the collection of bulky items. Sort It also provides details of a wide range of outlets across Scotland that offer goods and services to help people reduce and reuse their household waste.
