Kirkcaldy Pathhead Sands

Fife

The beach is located to the East of Kirkcaldy overlooking the Firth of Forth and in 2016 was re profiled and upgraded by Fife Coast & Countryside Trust with Funding from the Coastal Communities Fund. Small coastal dunes have been reinstated replacing the poor coastal defences that once existed.

History

Pathhead was an independent village before it was incorporated into the Royal burgh of Kirkcaldy. We know that in 1666 there were eighty houses in Pathhead. the town houses the historic Ravenscraig Castle commissioned by James II in 1460; many of the former premises of the Nairn's Linoleum Factories; and, the Manse, Historically, the village was a centre for nailmaking, It looks out over Pathhead Sands.

The historic centre of Pathhead is a trio of streets running parallel with the coast, Nether Street, Mid Street and what used to be Back Street, now Commercial Street. Water was supplied from wells at either end of Mid Street and vibrant commerce was centred on the Pathhead and Sinclairtown Reform Co-operative Society, which was established in 1914.

Good open views out to sea, bounded by rocky coast and woodland to the north, large managed grassland area with some tree cover.

Setting

Pathhead Sands lies to the east of Kirkcaldy's harbour. The beach is a mixture of shingle and sand. Kirkcaldy Harbour which was once a busy commercial port. It is now home to a small marina.There are views from the beach across the Firth of Forth, towards Edinburgh and Cockenzie.

Getting There

Pathhead Sands is located in a quiet area to the East of Kirkcaldy that is on a regular bus route. Kirkcaldy also has a train station which is only a 2 minute walk from the bus station. For further information on bus times please call 0871 200 2233.
